02 Oct Abstract Paintings
As a child I grew up in a place where I could stand high on the cliffs and watch the birds fly. The ravens in particular seemed to play and enjoy the immense freedom of flight. I longed to feel the pure immediate joy and sense of release the birds appeared to have naturally. Of course I knew the birds didn’t experience that, it is what I wanted to feel. Birds represent the ability to feel love, joy and pure empathy. They are lightness and being in the moment.
The paintings are intended to be imaginative landscapes of what might be. A world that is filled with energy, motion and so much more then are eyes can see. Only our imagination is capable of visualizing it. The landscapes are composed of many layers of oil paint mixed with wax applied to wood panels. I begin each painting using a mix of cold wax and paint. There are many layers that are built up and torn down. I used ordinary objects to build up the layers and create texture. Once the layers are built up sufficiently, the lower layers can be revealed again by scratching, scraping or applying solvent. This layering process creates complex color and texture. The layers give a sense of the richness of emotional experience and, feelings of being in the moment.
